Recently I was introduced to the "Master of Horror", Dario Argento. I started off with a few of his lesser films and I wasn't sure what all the fuss over the Italian director was about. However, after sitting through this film, I soon found out. Deep Red is considered to be Argento's Masterpiece. This story involves a psychic that predicts that a person that once murdered, will do so again. The psychic's powers are proven right as she falls victim to her own predictions. The murder is witnessed by a pianist that teams up with a reporter in an attempt to track down the murderer. The investigation doesn't go so well as those that can help identify the killer, become victims themselves.
What I liked about this film...
The word masterpiece says it all. The camera work is beautiful! The music fits the film to perfection! The kill scenes are disturbing, yet stunning at the same time! And as I have come to learn from the 3 films that I have seen of Argento's, he is also the "Master of the Ending". The ending has a great twist to it. Deep Red will surely have you guessing who the killer is throughout the whole film and the climax is what completes this masterpiece.
What could have been better...
Does a masterpiece have anything that can be better? Not really, however there were a few things that I didn't like about this film. There are scenes that are only done in the Italian language, with English sub-titles of course. Honestly, it doesn't take that much away from the film, and it takes nothing away if you don't mind sub-titles. The only other aspect I can pick on is that there seem to be a few drawn out or un-needed scenes, but that also adds to the suspense of a film.
If you are a fan of Italian horror, you've probably seen this, if you haven't you should make it a priority. If you aren't a fan of Italian horror, this one might just change your mind. I don't like to recommend films, but I don't think you will be too disappointed by this one.
