It's happened to me and just want to share it with you and give a few hints to avoid it from happening to you or someone you love.
Some time ago, someone stole some mail from me and the next thing I know, there are credit cards being used with my name on it and some outrageous charges. I finally cleared it up but, I've learned to avoid this kind of garbage as much as I can.
Get a shredder, like a cross-cut or confetti style and shred papers that have account numbers, names, addresses or bank statements on them. Don't give a person a reason to go dumpster diving and get your information.
For those who have post office boxes, I assume you really don't have to worry about your mail growing legs and sprinting down the street. For others, all I can say is keep a close eye on your mail.
Don't volunteer your information out to others.
At a store or ATM machine, watch for people standing either behind you or next to you in line for those camera phones. It's easy to snap shot a picture of account numbers and such.
That's all I can think of right now. If anyone can think of other ideals, please post them.
Thank you.

I also forgot another one. For those with credit cards, I've started putting on the back where your signatures go, SEE ID. That way, the clerk or who ever has to ask to see your picture ID to make sure it's you using that card.

This has happened to my Mum before. She went to Las Vagas and used her credit card and then when she got her bank statement it said that she had used it in Texas, Florida and loads of other US States. So somebody had obviously got her card details while we were in Vagas.

I own two paper shredders. No identity theft for me. And if you're worried, get a Visa! "If your credit card is lost or stolen you're not liable for fraudulent charges."

I love to shred anything that's paper. I'm on my second shredder now. Burned the motor out of the first one. Seem to do that with anything with a motor.

If it fits, I shred it. I just want to be cautious is all. Like all those credit card applications that come in the mail. Have a few cards and the next thing ya know, everyone with a company sends 'em. Like, save a tree. Although, you can always use the shredded paper for packaging materials.

We got us a paper shredder a while back and we like it a lot. Our neighbors are so freakin nosy. I make sure to shred up my naughty catalog whenever I get it in the mail. If my neighbors ever found out I'd be the talk of the whole town. Seriously though you can't even pull up at the front of our house, etc. without them peeking through their windows or something. It's ridiculous!!
