Why is 13 unlucky?
Long before the Hollywood slasher movies, Friday the 13th was already regarded as an evil and unlucky day, supposedly because there were 13 people at the Last Supper. Also, according to the Bible, Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit on a Friday, and in the holy Book of Apocrypha, it is foretold that the Antichrist will appear on the 13th day of a month which begins with a Sunday - the 13th day of any month beginning with a Sunday will of course be a Friday 13th. According to a growing number of historians, Christ was crucified on a Friday 13th September. The number 13 is venerated by occultists and Satanists, and according to superstition, any one with 13 letters in their name is regarded to have the Devil's luck. Much has been made of the fact that over 30 of history's most infamous serial killers have all had 13 letters in their name. People like: Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Albert De S alvo (Boston Strangler), Theodore Bundy, and Jeffrey Dhamer all had 13 letters in their names, and several killed a victim on a Friday the 13th. There are 13 members in a witches coven, and the coven meets on the nights when the moon is full: there are 13 full moons in a year.
WEIRD INCIDENTS CONNECTED WITH THE NUMBER 13
On Friday 13 June 1930, Sir Henry Seagrave was advised not
to make an attempt on the world water speed record because
of the unlucky date. He said: "I defy superstition." At 13
minutes past 1pm (13th hour), Sir Henry was killed when his
boat overturned on Lake Windermere.
On a Friday 13 in 1972, a pilot was told not to fly his
passenger jet until the 14th by a gypsy. The pilot said
he didn't believe in mumbo jumbo about Friday 13th and
went ahead with the flight. He was killed when his jet
crashed into the Andes on that date, and the surviving
passengers who were left stranded without food were
forced to resort to cannibalism to survive.
On a Friday 13th in 1979, Prince Charles was interviewed
on Desert Island Discs and he said he thought the so-called
unlucky date was "pure bunkum". After he left the BBC,
Charles went to view renovation work at Exeter Cathedral,
and he accidentally walked into sca ffolding bars and was
almost knocked unconscious.
On Friday 13th January 1984, a Thames TV programme
knocking the Friday 13th superstition had to be
abandoned when a hurricane destroyed the studios at
Teddington. Nine people were killed in the freak
hurricane, including the driver of a number 13 bus
in Surrey.
On Friday 13th March 1987, a man named Monty Sterling
who had suffered bad luck and serious injuries on twelve
occasions in the past when Friday the 13th arrived, decided
to stay in bed all day. Incredibly, Mr Sterling still
became a victim of the Friday 13th curse, even in bed,
because a transit van skidded off the main road and
ploughed into his living room. A fire broke out and Monty
was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. He was cared
for in ward 13 of Frimley Hospital, Surrey.
APOLLO 13 COINCIDENCE
the ill-starred Apollo 13 roars into the blue
On April 13, 1970 at 13 hundred hours, 13 minutes and 13
seconds, there was an explosion onboard Apollo 13, which
was 213,000 miles from Earth on its way to the moon. It was
a fault in circuit 13 which had caused an oxygen cell in the
spacecraft to explode. Astronaut Jim Lovell saw indicator
lamp 13 flash, and later when the ship was ready to enter
Earth's atmosphere, Jim Lovell jettisoned the lunar service
model - and he could see that the explosion had blown a
panel away from the ship. That panel measured 13 feet by
13 feet. back on Earth a month later, Lovell entered a
charity raffle - and he won with ticket number 13.
