my boss didnt know where babies came from

Though that I'd share this story that happened to me that was so stupid that even after 3 years I can't wrap my brain around it . In December of 2005 my wife and I had been trying to have a baby for some time with no success so we decided to try a fertility doctor. We went to local doctor and they ran tests it took about 5 monthes to run test on my wife and I and we were told everthing checked out but that they had done everthing here that they could do. So we were refered to a fertility doctor who was about 2 hours away. We first saw him in June 2006 and at the time the job i had i was there for 5 years. I was working 12 hr shifts 3 days on 3 days off and had planned to use vacation time to go to the dr if it was in a day that i had to work and because i was off thru the week i would of had enough time to cover me thru the end of the year.But after our first go around i had my schedule switch to 7am-3pm m-f. there in lied the problemwe were gone to go thru the endof the year if needed but if we did our appointments were at 8 am the process took about3 hrs and we had a 2 hr drive home i told my boss about it he told me to go to hr and talk to the head of hr. which i did i told her that i had to be there at least 2 days a monthto do my part but that my wife had to go 3 or 4 trip which i didnt need to be there they were ginna run test on her and she could go by herself. i asked if my vacation dayy ran out and i had been there for 5 years and had no unexcused absences on my record would they work with me. she told me no.
NOW heres the stupid part she get this look on her face and i know that a dumb questions a comming and i was right The H.R. director looked at meand said " BUt I'm not sure I understand this. If your wife has to go to the fertility doctor why do you have to go?"
at first i laughed because i thought becase she knew me and that i had a sence of humor she was trying to be funny and i was wrong she was serious she either didnt know what a fertility dr was or why they did. Now I still after 3 years later dont know how do you answer that and keep your job? the only thing i could thing of was to say "It's a fertility doctor!?!" nothing "Where trying to have a baby and there helping us with it." thinging that she would get it. Nothing. she finally says " Yeah, But why do you have to be there?"
i didnt know what to do and i need my job so i ssaid " is it all right if the dr. faxes something over to you to explain why i have to be there." she said that was fine.
Now i'm not a smart guy but im not a complete idiot either but im not sure how would you answer that and keep your job?
