Now, to the Freddie octave battle - His octave range is much higher than 3.5 taking into account the falsetto he uses. People can disqualify him for that if they want to but I've never heard anyone transition from the powerful notes he hits into falsetto like he does... it just can't be replicated.
But... the important thing about vocalists is the transition... if you cannot change from low to high, loud to soft while embedding the intended emotion of the song then octave means nothing. What makes Mercury the greatest is that it was seemingly effortless as he was a complete master of it all.

I'd say my favorite vocalists go like this:
Punk / Oi! - male, Micky Fitz (The Business); female, Brody Dalle (The Distillers)
Hard Rock - male, Bon Scott (AC/DC); female, Joan Jett
Metal - male, Rob Halford (Judas Priest); female, n/a never heard one I liked
Reggae - male, Fred "Toots" Hibbert (Toots & The Maytals); female, Claudette (Claudette & The Corporation)
I also really like Beth Gibbons from Portishead. Didn't really know where to put her.

Ronnie James Dio's a guy. He's ok, but I can't bring myself to like him as the singer for Black Sabbath. That's Ozzy, always was, always will be.

Agreed. I prefer Ozzy in Sabbath to Ozzy solo, and I prefer Ronnie James Dio to Dio than I do with Sabbath.

Ozzy is English, and so are all the other original members of Black Sabbath. Dunno about Dio et al. Don't much care.

mtc1998 you are either the smartest person here or you have the greatest unintended comedic timing in the history of the planet.
