Whilst the first will always be a favorite of mine, i actually really liked Freddys Dead.
Freddys Revenge was also good.

Freddy's Revenge is underrated excellence. Freddy's Dead gets the hate it deserves.

Tough call between I and II....but I'm going with II.
As good as the original is, (and it is great), the second one is darker, scarier, and more twisted, more perverse.
I like the haunted house idea, linking 1428 Elm St to the storyline...and in the grand scheme of the series, Freddy himself is still really scary...he hasn't turned into the 1-liner-spouting parody of himself he would become later.
The Freddy makeup is great too...the scariest of the series. I don't care for the knives coming straight out of his fingers, but I can overlook that in light of how good the movie is overall.
The idea of Freddy using one particular person to kill for him, not necessarily to regain enough power to come into our world, but just for the cruel, sadistic pleasure of it...that's Freddy's trademark, and what makes him a cool villain. There's the fact he's basically inescapable - sooner or later, you're going to fall asleep, and then your ass is HIS - but it's the cruelty he shows that makes him truly terrifying.
ANOES II is, without a doubt, one of the best horror sequels I've ever seen, in many ways superior to the original, for the reasons I've stated above. It's in the same league as F13 II and Halloween II - both excellent sequels - and certainly on my list of best movie sequels of any genre.

For me, the original will likely always be my favorite, but II is my favorite pure Freddy movie for the reasons you mentioned.
