"Doris Wishman's Cult Classic". "Warning: This film contains scenes of extreme violence and gore". Those are just a few quotes from the cover of this DVD. Pretty intriguing words that catch ones attention while browsing the horror section at the local Sam Goodys. Turn the DVD over and you find more encouraging words that shout, "Buy me," as you read "One of the more idiosyncratic world views ever committed to film." Surely enough to convince the reviewer that this film was worthy of the $9.99 tag it carried.
A Night To Dismember is a film about the Kent family that is told through the narration of a Detective who tells the gruesome story that took place on October 15, 1986 . Vicki Kent, who is played by Samantha Fox (as I came to find out, not the singer, but a porn star. That's right, I said porn star), is sent to an asylum for the murder of two teens a few years before this story takes place. Vicki is released and some are worried that she may revert to killing again. As she settles in at home, strange things start to happen and soon the killing starts again. Has Vicki reverted to her old ways or is she being set up? One by one the family starts to get smaller, as gruesome murders continue to occur. By the end of the film, there is one left standing and a Detective figures it out by reading a diary.
All sounds well. OK, in honor of the $9.99 that I was so happy to spend for this film, I will start with what I didn't like about this film. Here we go....
The first 13 minutes or so is complete narration. I believe there were two short instances where the mother of the Kent family actually spoke. The quality of this film is extremely low budget. I mean extremely. Sometimes the music cuts in and out. Sometimes you can't really tell if its night or day. The quality of this film, makes the quality of a film like "Pieces" seem like an Argento film. There are a lot of feet and ankle shots in the first half of this film. There is gore to this film and violence I suppose, however, they leave alot to be desired. For example, in one scene, a guy is getting a hatchet to the chest and it is barely touching his shirt; it looks like he is being hit by a child with a plastic hatchet. There is a scene in the early part of the film that involves relatives of the Kents, but really doesn't tie into the rest of the film. The Detective that does end up solving the "mystery" narrates this film, but alot of what he tells us there is no way he really would have know about it, unless of course the diaries went that far in depth. I will through up a spoiler here of one scene that really had me busting a gut.
In one scene a guy gets punched through the back and the arm comes out his stomach with his heart in the killers hand.
What I liked about this film....
The film is only 69 minutes long. For those that like nudity, there is alittle in this film. "A Night To Dismember" is truly so bad, I enjoyed watching it and laughed at alot of it, but I do NOT recommend this film to anyone. And it did make "The Village" no longer be the worst horror film I've seen.
Rating.... 1.5. I give it an extra point because I laughed alot during this film, for all the wrong reasons though.
