There are not many family horror movies... and there's probably a good reason for that. But, I saw this as a kid in a theater and it was the first scary movie my parents let me go to. It has a nice genuinely creepy feel to it and I've watched it several more times through the years. For what it is, it does succeed. Solid 7 from me.
