Castle in the Sky is one of the best feature length anime films ever. I've watched this by myself, with my Mom and with my son. Everyone loved it and it gets a solid 8 from me.

Was it as good as How to Train Your Dragon? I ended up seeing that one and really enjoyed it!

No, I wouldn't say it was quite as good. But, it is not really that comparable. They are two very different movies, the only things they have in common is they are animated and good.
