It's a classic for sure, but it could have been better so I'll stop at 8.

Roller coaster of feels with this movie. So up and down, for me. Man did it have potential, though. First half of the movie was 98% imagery, 2% plot development. When it did pick up it got EXCELLENT. Then it trailed off into bizarre, hippie weirdness in the end. Kubrick clearly tried to capitalize on the big acid/peyote movement of the 60s. I'll bet all those hippies were tripping ballz when 10 minutes of pretty colors and shapes transcended across the screen for almost ten straight minutes of nothingness. On a side note, I laughed my ass off when HAL said "Look, Dave... I can see you're really upset about this." Who knows, though? Maybe all those people who were high on hallucinogens when they watched this movie ended up having life all figured out by the time the credits rolled. I was thoroughly bored to tears at some parts, but completely enthralled with others. Tough to rank. On a five-star scale I'd give it a 3/5, which transitions to a score of 6.

^Jason - that sums up my feelings about this one pretty well. I LOVE imagery like that and Space is one of if not my favorite subjects to study and dream about - if not for that this film would have lost me completely on the story and ending alone. But, I give a bonus point or so just for being so darned good at what it does do and being so far (out there) ahead of its time.
