Below is my rankings of the top ten sci-fi/fantasy swords of all time... please feel free to mention your own favorites...
Number Ten - Blade's Sword
Wesley Snipes sliced and diced three movies worth of vampire butts with this bad boy. The coolest thing about Blade's blade is it's hidden defense mechanism - If anyone other than Blade tries to wield it they most likely will lose a hand as nasty little spikes pop out of the handle!
Number Nine - The Thundercats
Sword of Omens
Sword of Omens
Having the mind of a child is actually a plus for LionO as he fights evil with a pure heart. With the mighty Sword of Omens he is as powerful as any full grown Thundercat. Not to mention that Thundercat symbol is wicked cool!
Number Eight - Conan's Sword The Atlantean
Conan was created in 1932 by American writer Robert E. Howard. However it wasn't until 1982 that the barbarian warrior became a household name when Arnold Schwarzenegger brandished the Atlantean on the silver screen. And I still can't get over him punching out that camel.
Number Seven - LOTR's Sting
Maegnas aen estar nín - dagnir in yngyl im
'[the] sharp-point I am called - [the] slayer of spiders I [am].'
Maegnas aen estar nín - dagnir in yngyl im
'[the] sharp-point I am called - [the] slayer of spiders I [am].'
Bilbo Baggins found this magical dagger in a troll-hoard in The Hobbit. Later he gives it to Frodo before The Fellowship of the Rings departs. If you have even the teeniest geek bone in your body it had to be vibrating when Sting warned the Fellowship of approaching orcs by glowing blue.
Number Six - Highlander's MacLeod Sword
"There can be only one!" Well actually there are many breathtaking swords in the Highlander series. The original sword of Connor MacLeod stands the test of time down through the eons of immortal battles and is the ultimate symbol of the franchise.
Number Five - Final Fantasy's Buster Sword
"That's not a knife, this is a KNIFE!" The gargantuan Buster Sword appears in multiple Final Fantasy games and is also seen marking the grave of Zack Fair in the Advent Children movie. Cloud Strife's weapon in FFVII is barely edged out of the four spot by...
Number Four - Voltron's Blazing Sword
"Form Blazing Sword" is a phrase that still gives 80's geeks chill bumps. It meant the end for any Ro-beast in the vicinity. When The Defender of the Universe swung for the fences his opponents would stand befuddled for a moment before separating at the point of impact then exploding into spectacular anime eye candy! Go Lion...
Number Three - He-Man's Power Sword
Yeah, Prince Adam was a forgettable wuss... but when he held that Power Sword high and bellowed "By the power of Grayskull" his iconic transformation into the Beastman bashing, Mer-Man mashing, mountain tossing He-Man began. Then the scaredy cat Cringer morphed into the fearsome Battlecat as the sword's energy was aimed in his direction... I have the POWER!
Number Two - Excalibur
No sword has been in the imagination of fantasy buffs longer than the legendary sword of King Arthur. Excalibur has been part of countless tales through the Dark Ages to modern books and movies. Whether reading the Mists of Avalon or pretending to be a knight in the back yard Excalibur evoked a magical sense of wonder in all of us. Really, if it wasn't for the next entry Excalibur would have been an easy choice for number one.
Number One - Star Wars - The Lightsaber
In just a measly three decades - The Force is with us and the humming energy sword has become the most iconic weapon in history. Star Wars fan or not - something you enjoy somewhere down the line owes a debt to the franchise - as it has impacted every form of media in exisistence... and nothing is more Star Wars than a lightsaber.
A Jedi's weapon, the lightsaber can only be constructed by a force user. Anakin's blue blade, that he always had trouble keeping up with was passed on to his son by Ben Kenobi. Luke Skywalker crafted his own green one in Return of the Jedi. Fan-boy's everywhere thought it couldn't get any better but when The Phantom Menace rolled in and Darth Maul ignited his red double-blade... hospitals everywhere were overloaded by the most geek-outs in history. "Wipe them out... all of them."
