I'm not really sure exactly why I'm EVEN giving this a six. Sure it has top notch acting, cinematography and a sweet score... but sometimes you actually need a decent story that goes along with all that. To me The Grey is just another product of the 'tragedy sells' shit that sweeps over artists from time to time.
The plot and ending would probably work well for a horror film, but instead it is shoehorned into a drama/action mess that so overuses Liam Nesson's acting chops it almost embarrasses me for him.
Spoiler... but not much of one:
The 'leave it up to me' ending almost works, but it comes so late into a depressing third act that it only makes me think a cliched - what might have been? I find it hard to believe soooo many critics enjoyed this.
The last flick that I saw in the theater that left this kind of disappointing, putrid taste in my mouth that even nom-nom good - artery clogging popcorn butter couldn't cover up was... The Mist - another true classic.

The Mist was sooo good, though. I finally went to see a movie after so many months of not going. I think it was actually six months! Saw Descendants with George Clooney and it was actually quite good. Back on topic, I don't even take into account what any critics say, especially after what happened with Roger Ebert. He shit all over The Silence of the Lambs when it first came out, not he loves the Hell out of it. Probably because the entire world disagrees with him. It seems like he changed his opinions to support the majority of moviegoers. Pretty lame, if you ask me. The Grey didn't really draw me in, so I doubt I'll be seeing it, any time soon.

I feel the same way about the critics... I usually enjoy the ones they don't. I saw the Red Tails movie on this basis and got burned... it was as bad as they said it was. I still enjoyed it way more than The Grey - which did draw me in and disappointed me for sure. I'm a big Neeson fan, I hope he does something else real soon to erase this from my head ;D

Thought I'd give a shout out to the brilliant Italian film, Rosso Sangue.
