i wonder when horror films were first made If you're going to derail the thread, so to speak, I'll answer that question. The first film to terrify audiences was L'Arrivée d'un Train en Gare de la Ciota (literally, "the arrival of a train at La Ciotat"), which was screened in 1895. The audience, who had never seen a film before, bought the illusion of a train coming straight at them. Some threw up their hands or ducked behind seats, while others literally ran screaming from the theatre, (or so goes the urban legend about it; it's not certain this actually happened, but it is certain people were scared). The filmmakers, French brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere, did not intend to frighten their audience, so I'd have to say the first intentionally scary movies probably came out of Europe in the 20's, 1920's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1922's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and 1925's Phantom of the Opera being among the first.

I believe there was a 1911 version of Frankenstein.

wasnt there a Hunchback of Notre dame the same year? While not exactly a horror film Im sure the image of Quasimodo was pretty horrific to audiences in 1911
