Many people involved with the history of the Patriots over-stepping their boundaries and diminishing the integrity of football have finally been speaking out on spygate since the new scandal with deflategate arose after the AFC Championship game. A lot of groundbreaking stories and information regarding not only the seasons where they won the Super Bowl, but the Super Bowls themselves, have finally surfaced in a recent ESPN article.
Before 2007, the Patriots were one of those teams I rooted for on the side. I was thrilled when they beat the Raiders in the Tuck Rule game, even though they were definitely gifted a berth to the Super Bowl. I also wanted them to beat the Rams, and I think I wanted them to beat the Panthers and Eagles too, though I've always liked both teams. After spygate surfaced, they instantly became one of my most hated teams. When all of that originally surfaced, I was kind of embarrassed that I ever rooted for them to begin with. I can't even imagine my reaction if it were the Broncos who had been doing these things for years.
What I find most comical about all of this is the behavior of the Patriots fans all over the internet. They flood every post about New England and condescendingly bash anything negative that might be said about their team. I have found that there are two types of Patriots fans. The fans who refuse to admit that their team cheated numerous times, and the fans who embrace it and blow it off as if every team does it. They contradict each other and it is hilarious. One fan will shamelessly embrace the Patriots cheating scandals and compare it to offside or holding penalties on the field, "both are cheating", while another fan will refuse to acknowledge any wrong doing by the Patriots at all, twist evidence and actually push the allegations of deflategate to the Colts. The most popular argument I'm seeing now, which might be my favorite, is Patriot fans now claiming that the Colts balls were the ones that were under-inflated, and the Patriots balls were perfectly fine. Comical isn't it? It didn't get like this overnight. They collaborate with each other on the forums, one lie leads to another, and out they come with the most bizarre explanation the world has ever known. I would be ashamed of my team if I knew they had been doing this all these years, and I think most fan bases would be, but the Patriots are a special kind of weird, and I don't think there is another fan base in the league that would react so foolishly as Patriots fans... except maybe Raiders fans... that would be an entertaining situation to watch unfold. As it is, though, we get Patriot nation, and in many incidents it is almost creepy the way they defend their team and their golden boy Brady. I think just about every fan of football outside of Boston feels they diminished the integrity of football, and now ESPN has released a lengthy article detailing the Patriots scandals from 2000 onward.
