First off, this is just my opinion. I know some people rank based on cultural impact, album sales and such. But my song rankings are based on enjoyment, appreciation, lyrical impact, song meanings and interpretations, and vocal and instrumental performances. Sentimental value also plays a factor in my rankings.

This is the toughest list I've ever put together. To pick 50 of the greatest rock songs ever written and rank them as a personal favorite list is difficult enough, especially when opinions on songs change. But to put them in perfect order is nearly impossible. I've come to a conclusion. The only songs that probably will remain where they are at are songs #1, #2 and #3. The rest may fluctuate from time to time. So, to the best of my ability, here are my 50 Greatest Songs In Rock History.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Album: A Night At The Opera
Release: November 21^st, 1975
Artist: Queen



I'm sure everyone knows it, and it has definitely been played to death on radio stations, but there is no denying the musical greatness of this song. This is my second favorite vocal performance in rock history (#1 is also on this list). Freddie's voice is all over the place in this song, and he nails every note beautifully. It is a very well written piece of music and a great solo to open up the last half of the song.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper

What a fantastic rockin' tune. It was written about the inevitability of death. The message is pretty clear... Don't fear it! There aren't many rock songs completely focused about death, that can create such an upbeat feeling in music. (Don't Fear) The Reaper is one of them, and it's one of the greatest songs ever.

Back On The Road Again

Artist: REO Speedwagon



There's nothing like a good, rockin' tune to drive along to on the highway. This is one of the best. The lyrics and story are similar to Ramblin' Man, by Hank Williams. But with a rock style and fast paced sound. An excellent song from a great band. You can never go wrong with great highway rock. For all the REO haters, yes, they can provide plenty of that.

Bad Moon Rising

The apocalypse is coming.. Let's party! Another upbeat song about horrible events on the rise. The verse "There's a bad moon on the rise" is commonly misheard as, "There's a bathroom on the right". John Fogerty, himself, sang those wrong lyrics at the end of the song during his Premonition tour in (I believe) 1998. But who knows if it was intentional, or not. Regardless, Bad Moon Rising is a great song to rock out to.

Tuesday's Gone

Artist: Lynyrd Skynyrd



One of the greatest songs ever, off of one of the greatest albums ever, by one of the greatest bands ever. Tuesday's Gone was written about going away and leaving a girl behind. Her name is Tuesday, but the song is also often interpreted as a special day of the week that leaves you behind. It has a great opening and the guitar riff is one of the most underappreciated riffs of all time.

Long, Long Way From Home

I would say this is my favorite Foreigner Album. 4 and Double Vision come very close, though. The opening riff hits hard in this one. A great beginning to this song and Lou Gramm comes in strong with his vocals. A fantastic rock song from Foreigner. I only wish they'd have played this when I saw them twice in concert.

The Waiting

"It's about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true. I've always felt it was an optimistic song", Tom Petty said about The Waiting. His vocals and the instrumentals fit the song perfectly and really hit deep. I'm sure every human being has felt exactly the way as Tom Petty's description of the song's meaning.

Born In The U.S.A.

Album: Born In The U.S.A.

Artist: Bruce Springsteen



The song is interpreted in many ways. It was written about Vietnam War veterans and their difficulty being accepted in returning to the states. Vietnam was the first, and only, war that the U.S. didnt win. Many people felt the veterans of Vietnam were treated badly upon their return. It's written about the Shame of Vietnam, rather than the Pride of America. Springsteen considers this his best song and is disappointed in the way the song was originally interpreted. It's hard for someone (especially me, who was born after the Vietnam era) to speculate on just how bad War veterans were treated, but it doesn't take away the impact that the song had on me.

Lunatic Fringe

A brilliant and hard rocking song about World War II and the oppression of Jews. My personal interpretation is that this was the final blow to Hitler's wish to abolish Jews. Lyrics, such as, "We're wise to you, this time", "We won't let you kill the laughter" and "No, you're not going to win, this time" are what gave me this conclusion. The lyrics are powerful, the song is rockin' and it left a heavy impact.

Midnight Rider

Artist: The Allman Brothers Band



Continuing on in the face of obstacles. This is what the song was written about. Life can be very difficult, at times, but don't let the worry or difficulties of life get the best of you. "No, I'm not gonna let 'em catch me". You can always count on the Allman Brothers for a great highway rock song and Duane Allman for some great, rockin' guitar.

A bitchin' riff opening to a bitchin' song. The song was written about the scenery and lifestyle of Colorado, which is something I can relate to. Colorado is a special place for me, and this song praises everything I love about it. It's a song that, while played frequently on the radio, still doesn't get old, at least for me.

What comes around, goes around. That's the main theme of Instant Karma. Karma is the belief that your actions will effect your lives in the future. Depending on the actions, good or bad, they will come back around. In John Lennon's, Instant Karma, karma occurs... instantly. A great message to the world and the song is upbeat and very fun.

Upset? Feelin' down? This song is just what the doctor ordered! Ted is always there to provide some rockin' tunes. The song pretty much sums up the way I feel about rock. It's fast paced, fun to jam to and describes what great rock & roll is, to me. "I've found a cure for my body and soul, I got me an overdose of rock & roll"!

Dust In The Wind

The biggest hit from Kansas. The atmosphere of the song strikes immediately. It makes you appreciate everything in life, from material possessions to succeeding and failing and so on. "I close my eyes only for a moment, and the moment's gone". Life is far too short, so live for every moment. An extremely powerful, yet, mellow and gentle song.

The Weight

This song is just overall, very, very fun. A great traveling song and one of my favorites to just sit down to, relax and clear my head. Take a load off! It was never a big hit, but is one of the most well known songs in classic rock. You can't go wrong with musical greatness. This song qualifies.

Chevy Van

A sentimental favorite, here. I grew up as a young kid listening to this song, a lot. Loved it then, and still love it today. It was released in the early 70s, when sex was becoming.... very common. I'm sure the ladies loved it, and I don't see why they wouldn't today. The opening acoustic guitar is very mellow and original and the lyrics are pretty much the way I described the song in this summary. Maybe I should give this song a try, some time?

Crazy On You

Heart can rock the freakin' house! The acoustic guitar at the beginning of ths song is mesmerising, but then it opens up for the electric riff. One of the best, if not the best, guitar openings to a song in rock history. But everything about this song is great. With Ann Wilson at vocals, you will never be disappointed. I feel that she is far and away the greatest female rock vocalist of all time. I'd give anything to see Heart perform, live.

January 12^th, 1969 marked a very important day in rock history. The debut album and introduction to one of the greatest bands in the history of music, Led Zeppelin. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You also marks the introduction of Led Zeppelin onto my Top 50 Greatest Songs In Rock History. If you've been wondering why the hell you haven't seen them in here, yet, stick around. There will be more Zeppelin coming. Led Zeppelin took the greatest blues songs and turned them into rock masterpieces. They've gotten a bit of criticism for lacking creatvity and borrowing heavily from the early blues artists, but are seldom praised for their ability to transition songs like this into the greatest genre in music. That, alone, is creativity we may never see again. This song is one of Robert Plant's greatest vocal performances and Jimmy Page's opening guitar is brilliant. A somber, but heavy, heavy tune.

This is a relatively long song, slightly over ten minutes, and sometimes considered two songs. The song's meaning is clear. It's about a captain of a ship who's grown "mighty sick", fears he will lose his vessel and wants to return home. The opening riff is what really made this song special for me. It just hits close to home. ;D.

Another sentimental favorite. This song hits pretty hard, and is ultimately just very fun to jam to. It's stood the test of time, it just never gets old. I've listened to this song countless times over the years and I don't love it any less. One of my favorites and it's very underappreciated.

Listen To Her Heart

From what I remember, this is my first ever favorite song. I grew up listening to most of these songs on the list and as a child, this one stood out above the rest and still remains a favorite. It's a very underrated Tom Petty song and still remains my favorite to this day. It's a shame, though. Most women today don't even have a heart, anymore.

Wish You Were Here

A timeless classic from Pink Floyd and a beautiful acoustic riff to open up the song. The song was written about the feeling of detachment and just hits right at home from beginning to end. Pink Floyd was a very diverse band and one of the most bizarre of all time. Wish You Were Here is only one of their masterpiece songs.

Rock Of Ages

Rock Of Ages is just a flat out bitchin' song from Def Leppard and it rocks to the core throughout the entire song. Believe it or not, there is actually no guitar on the verses in this song. They just come in very heavily with vocals, drums and bass. That's tough to pull off, and they sound fantastic. "What do you want? I want rock and roll".

Rain On The Scarecrow

Artist: John Cougar Mellencamp



Rain On The Scarecrow is a great country rock song. The riff opening is strong and heavy and the lyrics are fast paced and very meaningful. The meaning is clear. It describes financial difficulties farmers had. You can never go wrong with a great, rockin' driving song. A song I used to love as a child and still love today.

Bringin' On The Heartbreak

Artist: Def Leppard



I'm sure most of us can relate to this song. Very powerful lyrics and great background music to fit the vocals. Bringin' On The Heartbreak is a rocking powerhouse of emotion and very nicely written. My favorite line from the song is probably this: "You're like a candle, your flame's slowly fading. Burning out and burning me". A beautifully written, somber song that rocks.

The Pink Floyd masterpiece. My favorite song of all time by this band, just narrowly passing Wish You Were Here. I'm assuming Roger Waters hit a bit of a crisis when he wrote this song. It's about how time can slip away so easily, but you don't realize it until it's gone. It's upbeat, the lyrics are powerful, the song is rockin' and the message is brilliant.

Turn The Page

This song's studio version was originally released on the album, "Back In '72" and is the only live song on my list. The song was written about the difficulties of a musician's traveling life. The era of life they face that the fans don't see. The loneliness, aggravation and so on. It's very well written and sang, yet with limited instrumentals, it's become one of Seger's biggest and most well-known songs. Another great song to listen to on the road.

Renegade

This, in my opinion, is the greatest opening of all time to a fantastic rock song. Such heavy, heavy lyrics and an amazing sound to jam to. I've loved this song ever since I was a young kid and love it even more as time goes on. I'll never understand the hate this band gets.

Carry On Wayward Son

Just when I said Renegade had the greatest opening to a song of all time, in comes Kansas with Carry On Wayward Son. I'm always amazed with how well-timed and perfectly harmonized this song is. Seeing them perform this live in May, 2010 was unbelievable and completely restored my love for the song. They sounded just as great after all these years and hit the notes perfectly, just as they did in 1976 when they recorded the song. And who can forget that rockin' riff? A long time favorite and will remain one.

L.A. Woman

Here come The Doors. It pains me, to this day, knowing that this band had so many years of great music left in them when Jim died. L.A. Woman was their last album recorded, and it seemed as though, with L.A. Woman and Morrison Hotel, that they were headed down the path of much more mind-blowing, musical genius. L.A. Woman is one of the greatest songs ever written and performed. This song is very energetic, very brilliant and one of the greatest road songs of all time. Every single Doors song ever released, is a Doors song I love. No band has ever done that, or gotten through to me the way The Doors have.

Bobby Jean

Bobby Jean is such a beautiful song. It's not one of Bruce Springsteen's most well- known tracks, and I don't know why. The song opens up powerfully and continues to grow stronger throughout the song. The music fits the beautifully written lyrics so perfectly. And the saxophone solo at the end completes the song in a perfect way.

Dreamboat Annie

The masterpiece from Heart. The ocean waves in the background and the gentle sound of the acoustic guitar mixed with the most beautiful female voice in rock history makes one of the greatest songs ever written. Dreamboat Annie. The song is short, but very sweet and the emotion of the song lingers long after you've finished listening. It's amazing how much can be said in just two minutes.

Run Through The Jungle. One of the best sounding songs from CCR and one of my all time favorites. Also a favorite of Vietnam war veterans! The song may not have been about the Vietnam war, but it takes a great song to be able to find multiple meanings in it's lyrics. Run Through The Jungle is one of CCR's finest songs and just damn fun to rock out to.

Another rockin' Doors song. What an underrated riff. Jim also provides a powerful vocal performance, here, and I just can't help but feel thoroughly energetic every time I listen to this song. "This is the strangest life I've ever known...... YEAH!" Chills every time. Every time. Effortless power is displayed in this song. Something I deeply admire about it.

Crystal Ball

Tommy Shaw made this song amazing. Crystal Ball, in my opinion, showcases his highest moment in his music career. He proves he can sing, play beautiful acoustic guitar and put on a phenomenal guitar solo to finish the song. The band coming in and harmonizing for the main chorus just seals the deal for this song. The Styx masterpiece.

Stairway To Heaven

This song is widely considered to be the greatest song of all time, coming off an album that's almost inarguably the greatest rock album of all time, written and performed by a band who's widely considered to be the greatest band in music. You've either got to be wacky to not see the musical talent in Led Zeppelin, or you're just not listening. Every single member of the band puts on a fantastic performance for their respected instruments. The tempo is slow, but slowly, slowly, slowly picks up until, before you know it, you're listening to a heavy, heavy rock song. This song is more than deserving of it's high praise.

Not The Doors, again! I almost can't even describe the energy and enjoyment I get from this song. Five To One starts with a great drum introduction and slowly picks up with powerful, powerful vocals and lyrics from Jim and fantastic guitar from Robby Krieger, who's an incredibly underrated guitarist. Oh, what an amazing song. One of very many favorites from The Doors.

In My Time Of Dying

In my Time Of Dying is such a powerful song from Led Zeppelin. I absolutely love the opening bluesy riff from page at the beginning of the song. Then, in comes Bonham with his powerhouse percussion, and yet another rockin' riff from Jimmy Page. It is their longest recorded track, at 11:05, and it could be ten times longer and it wouldn't matter. I love the way Zeppelin interprets their style into songs they remake. Play ths song at my funeral!

The Battle Of Evermore

Really, Rob? More Led Zeppelin? Yes. In this song, Robert Plant displays one of my favorite vocal performances of his, with Sandy Denny performing with him. (Now, if anyone's been reading my small reviews, I did say that Bohemian Rhapsody was my 2nd favorite vocal performance of all time. In case you were wondering, this is not #1, but #1 is coming up, shortly) You never hear much talk about this song, much less the vocals, but it is another powerful rockin' tune and a brilliant opening with the mandolin from Jimmy Page. The Battle Of Evermore is one of Led Zeppelin's greatest songs.

Shambala! One of the funnest, most upbeat and happy songs I've ever listened to. In a funk? Give Shambala a listen. Another brilliant, brilliant song that has withstood the test of time and only gets better and better as the years go by. Everything about this song is fantastic. Three Dog Night provides some amazing songs for just about any mood you're in. This one is almost certain to bring you out of any funk.

Simple Man is an amazing song. This album will forever be the highlight of Lynyrd Skynyrd's career and this song will always remain one of the greatest ever written. I'm sure this is a message most mothers want to get across to their sons. The music is fantastic and the vocals are always fun to try to sing along to.

Foreplay/Long Time

You can always count on Boston for some great rock. But Foreplay/Long Time stands out from all their other songs. The opening keyboard solo is amazing to say the least! It only sets the tempo for great vocals and guitaring from Brad Delp and Tom Scholz. What a rockin' riff and what an upbeat song! Always fun to jam to.

Free Bird

Played to death, sure, but there is absolutely NO denying the musical genius in this song. Most people get the most enjoyment out of the outstanding solo from Allen Collins, but I enjoyed the opening keyboard and guitar, singing and music of the song the most. A childhood favorite and it's never been overplayed, to me. A song I still deeply appreciate over the countless years.

Child In Time

The greatest vocal performance of all time goes to Ian Gillan, of Deep Purple. The lyrics are very strong, the vocals are even stronger and the guitar solo is one of the greatest of all time! Ritchie Blackmore is one of rock's most talented guitarists and performs one of the best solos of his career and one of my all time favorites. The song opens up with some slow and mellow keyboarding from Jon Lord and paves the way for the amazing vocal sound and performance of Ian Gillan. Not a well known song, but a MUST listen.

Roadhouse Blues

This is probably my favorite driving song of all time and possibly the most fun I've ever had listening to a song. The riff is very original, one of the best, and Jim puts on one of my favorite vocal performances from him. This song is regarded by many to be "the greatest driving song" and "the ultimate bar song" of all time and it's difficult to argue. I think I'd have to agree on all accounts. "Well, I woke up this mornin' and I got myself a beer"!

Kashmir

This is probably the best sounding song of all time. Led Zeppelin, themselves, said that this was their best sounding song.. It's just musically perfect. The lyrics are brilliant and very well sang. Jimmy Page rocks, yet another, brilliant and astonishing guitar riff. One of the greatest riff masters ever, right behind Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Oh, what a song. "Tryin' to find... trying' to find... Where I've beeeen, ahhhhh!!!".

Wheel In The Sky

Wheel In The Sky just hits the spot in my love for rock and roll. The guitaring of Neal Schon and the phenomenal vocals of Steve Perry carried this song up to #4 on my list. A great traveling song and has always been a favorite of mine from Journey. What a song. What. A. Song.

When The Levee Breaks

Artist: Led Zeppelin




We've hit the top 3, and my favorite Zeppelin song ever written and performed. Another remake of some classic blues. The song was originally written about the most destructive river flood in the United States, killing 246 people in seven states, The Great Mississippi Flood of 1929. While Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie sang a great blues song, Led Zeppelin took their song and formed their greatest song of all time, for me. Every single moment of this song is probably the most powerful in music. The drum introduction from John Bonham is the greatest drum introduction to a song of all time, the riff and solo is absolutely rockin' and you can feel the emotion in Robert Plant's vocals. When The Levee Breaks, in my opinion, is the ultimate masterpiece of Led Zeppelin.

Who'll Stop The Rain

This song is a deep, sentimental favorite of mine, has withstood the test of time and continues to grow on me as the years go by. I've only been deeply, deeply into music the way I am now for about 7 or 8 years. There was a period I went through during my early teen years where I would only listen to a lot of the newer stuff that would come out. I never actually loved songs the way I do, now. One day, on the radio, I heard Who'll Stop The Rain, and it brought me WAY back to my young childhood. My dad has great concert speakers that his father gave to him (my grandpa was a bluegrass musician) and we'd go outside just about every day when he'd get off work, play with the dogs and rock out to some great songs. Who'll Stop The Rain brought me back to these days and restored my love for truly great music. I will never forget the moment I heard Who'll Stop The Rain again. It will forever remain a favorite of mine.

It's difficult to put together 50 of the greatest songs of all time and rank them in order of preference. But it speaks musical genius when your #1 song of all time is far and away your #1 song of all time. The End, by The Doors, is far and away my #1 song of all time.

No song has ever made me feel the way I feel when I hear The End. It generates and releases so much emotion that I have always fallen into a trance when I listen to it. It's so powerful that I'm almost forced to shut it off when I'm driving, because I begin losing focus on my surroundings (But I just can't shut it off). The songs tells countless stories in just 11 minutes and provides so much musical brilliance, I almost can't even begin to describe my appreciation. Then, Jim goes into Oedipus Complex. When he begins to sing, here, he provides a vision. Never, have I listened to a song that provides such a clear picture. Never, in a song, have I felt like a witness, rather than a listener. The Doors are the greatest band of all time, and created the absolute greatest song of all time.

Kudos for another awesome list! There are several songs I really love on here (you know of the Tom Petty ones). Freebird, Rain On The Scarecrow, (Don't Fear) The Reaper, Who'll Stop The Rain and of course Bohemian Rhapsody are highlights for me. As are some of the bands that I have different favorite songs by like - Piece of Mind - Boston.

Thanks for the feedback, and I hope you like the songs you haven't heard. Peace of Mind is a GREAT Boston song. One of my favorites from them. Feelin' Satisfied fell just outside the top 50, though.

As for the Boss... how far back do you have Streets of Philadelphia, Glory Days and Secret Garden (which I'm listening to right now). Those are probably my favorite Springsteen songs.

And have you heard [[Key West Intermezzo]] by John Cougar? That's by far my favorite by him and I like most all his songs.
